Watermelon is known as a refreshing fruit and can prevent dehydration. However, this fruit which contains lots of water also has other benefits, especially in people who are overweight.
A recent study revealed that consuming watermelon can prevent heart attacks in people who are overweight or obese. Besides, this fruit is also known to lower blood pressure in obese people, even when they are in cold weather.
So far, many people have heart attacks in cold weather because the body increases blood pressure to warm the body. In people who are overweight, the heart pumps blood harder, which can increase the risk of a heart attack.
However, this study reveals that consuming watermelon can prevent it all, both by lowering blood pressure and reducing heart attacks or strokes. Professor Arturo Figueroa from Florida State University explained that the pressure on the aorta and on the heart decreases when a person consumes watermelon extract.
These results were obtained by researchers after conducting a study of 13 obese men and women who had high blood pressure for 12 weeks, as reported by the Daily Mail (03/04). Half of them were asked to consume watermelon extract while half were given a placebo.
It is known that watermelon can lower blood pressure and pressure on the heart even in cold conditions. That way, these participants were also at lower risk of having a heart attack after consuming watermelon extract.
Apart from this research, previous research also found that doing exercises in warm water can also lower blood pressure. Even so, researchers are not sure what causes warm water to lower blood pressure. Possibly because the warmth can improve blood flow throughout the body.
