The Mediterranean diet as an antidote to depression

Previously the Mediterranean diet was known to help prevent heart disease and maintain heart health. However, a recent study revealed that this diet can also ward off and reduce feelings of depression.

These results were found by researchers in Spain after observing about 4,000 people aged 55 to 80 years. Participants were divided into several groups who were asked to undergo two types of diets, namely the Mediterranean diet and the low-fat diet for four years. During that time it is known that more than 200 participants experienced depression.

The Mediterranean diet is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and olive oil, as reported by the Daily Mail (25/02). This research reveals that the Mediterranean diet can reduce the risk of depression by up to 41 per cent in men who have diabetes, as published in the journal BMC Medicine.

The Mediterranean diet is also known to reduce inflammation levels. Inflammation usually reduces the secretion of a substance in the brain called neurotrophic. This low neurotrophic level is associated with a reduced risk of depression in participants.

If you have multiple risk factors for depression or stress. There's nothing wrong with trying the Mediterranean diet. This diet is also known to reduce the risk of diabetes, prevent pins and needles, and even keep you young.
