Ways to deal with children that are picky eaters

Ways to deal with children that are picky eaters

As a parent, your child's health is your top priority. You want to make sure they are getting all the nutrients they need to grow strong and healthy. But what happens when your little one becomes a picky eater? It can be frustrating and overwhelming, but don't worry - we've got some tips to help you overcome this challenge.

1. Try offering food when your child is hungry.
When their tummy is growling, they may be more willing to try new things and less likely to be picky. Plus, it can be easier to convince them to eat when they're genuinely hungry.

2. Limit their intake of sweet foods and drinks.
While it may be tempting to give in to their demands for sugary snacks, it's important to remember that these foods can be addictive and make it harder for your child to develop a taste for healthier options.

3. Get creative with your food preparation!
Kids love colourful and fun shapes, so try making their meals more interesting by using cookie cutters or arranging the food in fun designs. This can pique their curiosity and make mealtime more enjoyable for everyone.

4. Take your little one grocery shopping with you.
This can be a great opportunity to teach them about different foods and get them involved in the decision-making process. Let them pick out a new fruit or vegetable to try and encourage them to take ownership of their food choices.

5. During mealtime, try to keep distractions to a minimum.
Turn off the TV and put away any toys or devices that could divert their attention. This can help them focus on their food and encourage them to try new things.
Lastly, resist the urge to bribe your child with gifts or rewards for eating. This can create a negative association with food and set up unhealthy habits in the long run. Instead, try to make mealtimes a fun and positive experience, and celebrate their successes along the way.

Being a parent is hard work, but with these tips, you can help your picky eater develop a more adventurous palate and set them up for a lifetime of healthy eating habits. Good luck!

Want to get pregnant, avoid stress!

Want to get pregnant, avoid stress!

Stress is a ubiquitous part of modern life, and while most people are aware of its negative effects on overall health and well-being, it turns out that stress can also impact a woman's ability to get pregnant. According to a study reported on nytimes.com, stress can significantly increase the risk of infertility in women.

The four-year research conducted on 401 women who were trying to conceive, used a saliva test that can detect two enzymes associated with stress - the alpha-amylase enzyme and the hormone cortisol. The results revealed that those with high levels of the alpha-amylase enzyme in their saliva, indicating prolonged stress, had twice the risk of infertility.

Reproductive epidemiology expert Courtney D. Lynch from Ohio State University explains that stress can disrupt hormonal continuity between the brain, pituitary gland, and ovaries in women. This hormonal imbalance can negatively impact the ovulation process and egg maturation, thereby affecting their ability to conceive.

The impact of stress on women's reproductive health is not a new phenomenon, but this study is one of the largest and most comprehensive ones to date. The findings underline the importance of managing stress levels for women trying to conceive.

The good news is that there are several ways to manage stress effectively. Engaging in regular exercise, mindfulness meditation, yoga, or other relaxation techniques can help to reduce stress and promote overall health and well-being. Additionally, seeking professional help from a therapist or counsellor can also be beneficial.

While stress cannot be avoided entirely, it is crucial to recognize its negative effects on reproductive health and take proactive steps to manage it. By reducing stress levels, women can increase their chances of conceiving and improve their overall health and well-being.

Depression and stress can increase the risk of heart failure

Depression and stress can increase the risk of heart failure

Currently, not a few people still underestimate the symptoms of stress and depression they feel. Though depression is not a psychological problem lightly. Recent studies have even revealed that the symptoms of depression that are not recognized and ignored can trigger heart failure.

These results were obtained by researchers after observing 63,000 people in Norway. Participants were asked to carry out mental and physical examinations. After 11 years, about 1,500 of the participants had heart failure. Most of them show symptoms of depression and stress.

Compared with people who do not show symptoms of depression, people who have mild symptoms of depression are at a five per cent higher risk of developing heart failure. Meanwhile, moderate symptoms of depression can increase the risk of heart failure by up to 40 per cent, as reported by Health Day News (03/04).

"Depressive symptoms increase the likelihood of heart failure, the more severe depressive symptoms experienced the higher the risk," said lead researcher Lise Tuset Gustad from Levanger Hospital in Norway.

Many people are not aware that they have symptoms of depression. Often in the end the symptoms of depression are underestimated and ignored. Though depression is not just a mental illness but can also cause physical problems.

According to Gustad, people who experience depression have an unhealthy lifestyle. This encourages them to do other habits that are just as unhealthy as overeating and smoking. In the end, both lead to an increased risk of heart disease and heart failure.

In addition, depression also stimulates the body to produce more stress hormones. Your heart rate will increase, and so will your breathing rate. This can trigger inflammation in blood vessels and increase the risk of heart disease.

Gustad further suggested that someone better recognize the symptoms of depression in himself. Depression is easier to deal with in its early stages. Early symptoms include losing interest in things you normally enjoy and things outside of yourself.

Insomnia can increase the risk of stroke in teenagers

Insomnia can increase the risk of stroke in teenagers

Insomnia not only interferes with your important rest and sleep but can also trigger more serious health problems. A large study conducted in Taiwan revealed that insomnia can increase the risk of stroke, especially in adolescents and young people.

These results were found by researchers after observing more than 21,000 people who experience insomnia and 64,000 people who do not experience insomnia. None of the participants had previously had a stroke or had other sleep problems, such as sleep apnea.

After conducting research for four years researchers found that insomnia can increase a person's risk of stroke by up to 54 per cent. The risk is even greater in young people between the ages of 18 and 34. They are eight times more likely to have a stroke if they have insomnia.

Researchers also found that the more severe a person's insomnia, the higher the risk of stroke they have. Researcher Ya-Wen Hsu from Chia Nan University also emphasizes that the level of insomnia has a direct effect on the risk of stroke.

"We see that people who have sleep problems tend to have other health factors that can increase the risk of stroke. This could be caused by an unhealthy lifestyle," said Dr Suzanne Steinbaum from Lenox Hill Hospital, as reported by Web MD.

Researchers also argue that insomnia and stroke are actually in an interconnected cycle. Both can influence each other. It could be that insomnia increases the risk of stroke, or conversely, an unhealthy lifestyle that increases the risk of stroke also makes people experience insomnia.

Whatever it is, one clear thing is that it has a huge impact on young people and adolescents. Usually, young people and adolescents underestimate their sleep time and often stay up until the night. The results of this study encourage young people to pay attention to the quality and time of their sleep to avoid the risk of stroke.
